By using this formula, you can get a rough idea about the duty amount for your vehicle. You need to know the correct FOB price valuation given by the appropriate company.
Duty in SLR = [(FOB Value in JPY) + (Other in JPY)] * Yen rate * (Lap Percentage) * (Tax Percentage)
Other = Usually JPY 100,000/- for most of the vehicles
Yen Rate = Current YEN exchange rate (Today- JPY 1 = SLR1.32)
Lap Percentage = [(3-3 ½ Years) 70%, (2-3 Years) 75%, (1-2 Years) 80%, (1/2-1 Years) 90%]
For an example:
Calculate Duty for Honda Fit Aria (GD8)
FOB Value = JPY 870000 (Valuation given buy Stafford Motors in Sri Lanka)
Tax Percentage = 118% for all 1000CC to 1500CC Petrol Cars
Duty in SLR = [870000 + 100000]* 1.32 * (70/100)* (118/100)
= SLR 1057610/- (3-3 ½ Years)
Like wise you can calculate for the other year ranges too buy changing Lap Percentage value.
= SLR 1133154/- (2-3 Years)
= SLR 1208697/- (1-2 Years)
= SLR 1359785/- (1/2-1 Years)
Sri Lanka has slashed an import excise duty on vehicles by 50 percent. The slash in vehicle import duty is expected to especially help lift car import numbers to the country as cars are taxed on average 300% upon import. Unfortunately some of the bigger car sales in Colombo do the price controlling of the vehicles and not allowing Sri Lankan people to get the maximum benefit of the duty reduction. After reading this article, surely you will never be fooled.
